Choose the correct microphone
for the application:
All microphones are NOT created
equal. There are 2 basic types of microphones
categories...Dynamic (those which do not require additional
power to operate) and Condenser (those which require additional
power...such as Phantom power to operate) Dynamic microphones
tend to be less sensitive to high sound pressure levels, while
condensers are very sensitive.
Each of these 2 categories are
then broken up into many different "pickup patterns." Two of the
most popular are: Cardioid & Super or Hyper Cardioid. Cardioid
microphones pick up from the front as well as partially from the
side, but have good rejection from the rear. These are generally
used when monitors are placed directly in front of vocalists.
Super or hyper-cardioid microphones are more directional in
that, they do not pick up anything from the sides but do have a
sort of "tail" where they do pick up some sound from the rear.
These are typically used when monitors are placed at an angle to
the vocalist.
While there are many more pickup
patters and scenarios for microphone choice and placement, this
should give you a better understanding as to a few questions
that should be asked when purchasing a microphone for a
particular application.
